Pharmaceutical

Gelatin has been used for Pharmaceutical Applications for over 200 years

Non-allergenic, tasteless and odor neutral

The history of using gelatin as a way to deliver pharmaceutical dosages dates back to, at least, the early 19th century.  Gelatin has many special properties that provide significant advantages in the area of pharmaceutical applications.  It delivers a non-allergenic, tasteless and odor neutral delivery medium. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) considers gelatin a safe ingredient. Gelatin forms an effective barrier against air, which significantly extends shelf life and maintains purity for products.

Making some of life’s difficulties easier to swallow

Soft Capsules

Soft gel capsules are widely preferred by consumers because it makes them easy to swallow.  Soft capsules are one-piece and hermetically sealed to safely enclose a liquid/semi liquid to assure integrity and preserve purity.

Hard Capsules

Hard capsules are made in two distinct pieces, which are then closed after being filled.  Because high Bloom* and viscosity is required, bovine bone gel is considered best for this purpose.

Tablet Coatings

Gelatin provides an extremely effective way to coat tablets to minimize dust, mask unpleasant taste, and permit the printing and color coating for product identification.

Gelatin a truly a multi-capable product

Surgical/Dental Sponges

Gelatin sponges are used as a haemostatic agent to control bleeding following surgical procedures and can assist in the control and minimization of blood loss and formation of clots.

Additional pharmaceutical gelatin uses:

  • Hydrocolloid dressings
  • Plasma expanders
  • Granulation
  • Tableting
  • Encapsulation

* Note: Mr. Bloom invented a device for measuring the rigidity of a gelatin film. The more rigid the sample, the higher the Bloom number and the higher the Grade of gelatin.
